We like to out as often as possible and try out some of Devon's wonderful cycle routes. Paricularly those that are great for the family and all levels. Remember we're more picnic than pain, more leisure than Lycra!!
We shut up shop on the Saturday, leaving sunny Exmouth. The campervan was ready and packed. We headed off towards the mystic that is Dartmoor. As we edged around the A38, heading higher, wipers on, higher until we were in the swirling whirling mists that cling to the moor. Needless to say the other members of Family bikelands were none the wiser as they enjoyed syncronised fly catching!!
Our campsite was located just outside Tavistock, on the edge of the moor. Release the hounds!! The campsite was charming place that goes by the name of Langstone Manor, perfect for us. They allow for campervans, with hook-up available. They also have a selection of static homes and log cabins. But the real reason we chose Langstone was for it's onsite facilities. In addition to usual shower rooms, wash rooms, kitchen faciliites, there's a games room, hot food...oh and a bar! So as a arrived into the site, there was no worries about entertainment, either for the kids or us.
Up early this being 7 days before midsummers day. We readied ourselves and headed to the Granite Way. It's 11 miles long running between Okehampton and Lynford, so 22 if you're parking up and going to the end and back. The trail is mostly hard ground, being tarmac or hardpack chippings. The shallow gradients allow for most style of bike and for most ages. We took a selection of step-thru, Mixte, roadster and mini mountain bike, but nothing with more than 7 gears.
There are dramatic views on either side of the trail, our favourites were from Lake Viaduct and Meldon Viaduct. You'll experience views for miles, so don't forget your bins!! There were thumbs up all around for the Granite Way. So why don't you give it a go!
The Bikelands story was born out of a love for cycling, a penchant for style and an appreciation for a sustainable transport solution. Cycling is one of life's constants, since my first wobbly 'pedallings' along our street, getting to school, Uni and more recently around the streets of London. A holiday in La Rochelle, France was the inspirational straw that conceived The Bikelands Story.
Bikelands is nestled among all manner of cycle paths and trails and situated within an awesome triumvirate of Devonshire countryside. Whether it is the sandy beaches of Exmouth, the Gateway to The Jurassic Coastline, the ever changing beauty that is the Exe Estuary, or East Devon's hinterland of Woodbury Common, you'll feel as though you've gone to cycling heaven...Those That Ride Discover!
Cycling should be all inclusive, young or old and all those in between. We should also be doing it more often; leaving the car at home when we pop to the shops, even if it's only once a week. For family Bikelands it's a fun, cheap and healthy family day out. The kids always remember these days. But especially it's for you! To blow those cobwebs away and revive the soul.
At Bikelands we see ourselves more of a bicycle emporium rather than a straightforward shop. We’re more leisure than Lycra and more picnic than pain. We have a perfect range of elegant bicycles for town and gentle riding, for the ladies and gentlemen amongst us. Created by the London based team at Bobbin Bicycles.
Fixed wheel and single speed cycling is quickly growing in popularity. From it's underground cult followers of track enthusiasts and couriers. It's now spreading countrywide. If you're thinking about doing it, come and see us! I'm sure you have some questions. We have a great range of bikes from Tokyo Bike, Mango and Foffa. For those already indoctrinated, we know you love to customise. Choose from our wide range of components and accessories, including Brick Lane Bikes.
With our beautiful beaches only minutes away, we had to make sure we offered a classic cruiser too, Electra fits perfectly. Go on...Live the dream!
We think bicycles should have personality too. Whether it's a beautiful leather saddle, pannier, rack, bell or basket, you'll find what you need at Bikelands. Choose from Brooks, Basil and Linus, amongst other less known gems. We also have a wide range of stylish accessories and unusual finds, including Bern helmets, Bookman lights and Oopsmark hand crafted leather wine rack. In fact, we're continuously seeking out quirky, stylish and of course practical cycling accessories so remember to keep popping back.
Since opening Bikelands we are lucky enough to have become part of the community here in Exmouth. Many of our customers have become friends. We get many repeat visitors whether that's the 'locals' popping in for a chat, to see whats new in or returning holiday makers who want a repeat of the wonderful day out they had on our bikes the previous year. So don't be shy, pop in for a chat ... Browse, Borrow, Buy...
Happy cycling, Rebecca, Stuart & Family Bikelands x
