The Granite Way

We like to out as often as possible and try out some of Devon's wonderful cycle routes.  Paricularly those that are great for the family and all levels.  Remember we're more picnic than pain, more leisure than Lycra!!

We shut up shop on the Saturday, leaving sunny Exmouth.  The campervan was ready and packed.  We headed off towards the mystic that is Dartmoor.  As we edged around the A38, heading higher, wipers on, higher until we were in the swirling whirling mists that cling to the moor.  Needless to say the other members of Family bikelands were none the wiser as they enjoyed syncronised fly catching!!

Our campsite was located just outside Tavistock, on the edge of the moor.  Release the hounds!!  The campsite was charming place that goes by the name of Langstone Manor, perfect for us.  They allow for campervans, with hook-up available.  They also have a selection of static homes and log cabins.  But the real reason we chose Langstone was for it's onsite facilities.  In addition to usual shower rooms, wash rooms, kitchen faciliites, there's a games room, hot food...oh and a bar! So as a arrived into the site, there was no worries about entertainment, either for the kids or us.

Up early this being 7 days before midsummers day.  We readied ourselves and headed to the Granite Way.  It's 11 miles long running between Okehampton and Lynford, so 22 if you're parking up and going to the end and back.  The trail is mostly hard ground, being tarmac or hardpack chippings.  The shallow gradients allow for most style of bike and for most ages.  We took a selection of step-thru, Mixte, roadster and mini mountain bike, but nothing with more than 7 gears.

There are dramatic views on either side of the trail, our favourites were from Lake Viaduct and Meldon Viaduct.  You'll experience views for miles, so don't forget your bins!!  There were thumbs up all around for the Granite Way.  So why don't you give it a go!
